// 01 / The opportunity

Shared protocols. Stronger adoption.

libp2p is used across Ethereum, Filecoin, and other decentralized systems, but implementation teams and adopters can benefit from tighter coordination. This initiative aims to align roadmaps, make ecosystem needs visible, revive specification collaboration, and make it easier to build, test, maintain, and adopt libp2p.

// six open workstreams

Where the coordination happens.

01 / PUBSUB

Gossipsub performance & resilience

Improve pubsub performance, fault tolerance, dynamic peer scoring, scalability, and shared benchmarks across implementations and real deployments.

02 / CONNECTIVITY

NAT traversal & relaying

Advance hole punching, AutoRelay, connection reliability, and practical connectivity for mobile, browser, and constrained environments.

03 / INTEROPERABILITY

Cross-implementation testing

Coordinate Rust, JavaScript, Go, nim-libp2p, and other implementations through reproducible tests, conformance suites, and visible CI dashboards.

04 / SPECIFICATIONS

Specifications & governance

Improve RFC discoverability, versioning, review pathways, spec ownership, and alignment between protocol documents and implementation behavior.

05 / DEVELOPER EXPERIENCE

Docs, tooling & good defaults

Make onboarding easier with reference examples, browser support, RPC abstractions, clear troubleshooting, and less complex paths to production.

06 / ECOSYSTEM INTELLIGENCE

Discoverability & adoption

Connect maintainers, repositories, events, funding, contributors, and adopter stories with metrics and tools that make ecosystem activity visible.

// Recommended hackathon for contributors

Machine-Checked Devcon Week

An online hackathon during Devcon week: pick real protocol tasks from a public repo and learn Lean 4, formal verification, and Ethereum networking by shipping code and proofs.

When
Online, 2–7 November 2026
Apply by
1 November 2026
Prize pool
$1,000
Cohort
Under ten contributors
  • You implement pieces of Ethereum's networking layer in Lean 4 and prove properties of what you build — every proof checked by Lean's kernel.
  • Tasks live as issues in the leanp2p repository: claim one, open a pull request within 8 hours, and the organisers review within 12.
  • Participation is free and open to any level — what matters is motivation. Acceptances are announced in the event channel on the Invisible Garden Discord.
  • Code closes 7 November 2026 at 23:59 UTC, with a short video of your contributions due by 15 November 2026 at 23:59 UTC.

Write to the initiative organisers

Whether you maintain an implementation, run libp2p in production, research the protocol, or fund ecosystem work, write to both organisers below. Each button opens a message with a short outline you can fill in and send — or propose a concrete collaboration.

Coordinate upstream. Build in the open. Strengthen libp2p.
